Overland Park, KS – The National Auctioneers Association Education Institute (NAAEI) announces that Michael Hoffman, of Michael Hoffman & Associations, Pickerington, OH, has earned the Certified Auctioneers Institute (CAI) designation, the most highly respected education designation in the auction industry.

Fewer than 5 percent of auctioneers nationwide achieve CAI status.

Designed for leaders in the auction industry and auction firm decision-makers, CAI is a three-year executive development program offered at Indiana University in Bloomington, IN.  Enrollment is limited to professional auctioneers with several years of experience, and is focused on developing the skills and providing the tools required to run a top-notch auction firm.

CAI graduates have the knowledge and skills necessary to provide high-quality services to all types of clients.

A CAI designation informs attorneys, trust officers, government officials, financial planners, accountants, real estate professionals and others that the CAI designation holder is an astute business person who upholds the highest professional standards.

CAI courses are taught by some of the most distinguished auction professionals in the country, and include courses in management skills, business ethics, finance, strategic planning, marketing and more.

CAI designees must adhere to a strict code of ethics and standards of practice, and complete a minimum of 24 hours of continuing education courses every three years.

In addition to CAI, Hoffman holds Accredited Auctioneer of Real Estate(AARE) and Certified Estate Specialist (CES) designations.  He has also recently completed coursework in personal property appraisal and benefit auctions.

March 12, 2007

The National Auctioneers Association Education Institute (NAAEI) announces that Michael Hoffman, of Michael Hoffman & Associates, Pickerington, OH, has received the prestigious designation of Accredited Auctioneer of Real Estate (AARE).

The Institute’s AARE program educates and trains real estate and auction marketing professionals in ways that enhance their client services. Course topics include legal issues, financial analysis, property transfer, as well as case studies on the sale of agricultural, residential, commercial and industrial real estate using the auction method of marketing. There are currently fewer than 350 designees – fewer than 1 percent of all North American auctioneers – who hold the AARE designation.

“I recognize that there is an ever-increasing number of real estate auctions and I want to be on the crest of this expanding industry,” Hoffman said.

According to the National Auctioneers Association, residential real estate auctions, the fastest-growing sector of the auction industry, grew by 4.4 percent in the first half of 2006, up slightly from the 4.0 percent at the same time last year. Residential real estate grew at 8.4 percent overall in 2005, and has been the topic of widespread media coverage as a growing business niche.

Earning the Accredited Auctioneer of Real Estate (AARE) designation requires successful completion of a three-part educational program, which includes six days of instruction on selling real estate at auction, a comprehensive examination, submission of an acceptable auction summary report and proof of conducting a minimum of 10 real estate auctions.  AARE designees must adhere to a strict code of ethics and standards of practice, and complete a minimum of 24 hours of continuing education courses every three years.

An auctioneer with the AARE designation has gone the “extra mile” to ensure that he or she offers the highest level of professionalism and most up-to-date information when it comes to selling real estate at auction. Whether selling residential, agricultural, commercial or industrial properties, AARE auctioneers have enhanced knowledge in all pertinent areas, such as:

  • Real estate auction marketing techniques
  • Financial/investment calculations and decisions
  • Evaluating cash flow
  • Holding-period analysis and problems
  • Tax consequences of buying and selling properties
  • Multi-parcel real estate auctions

Hoffman’s Conferred As Certified Estate Specialists:

November 9, 2006

The National Auctioneers Association Education Institute (NAAEI) announced that Michael and Rachel Hoffman, of Michael Hoffman & Associates, Pickerington, Ohio, have been awarded the designation of “Certified Estate Specialist” by the Institute. The husband and wife team attended the Institute’s Certified Estate Specialist (CES) designation program, and have gained entry to a select circle of 318 U.S. designees. Achieving the designation involves an intensive 21 hours of instruction and a comprehensive examination.

Designed to help auctioneers network with other professionals in the financial, business and legal community, this specialized program provides CES designated professionals to meet your estate-related needs. Certified Estate Specialists are experts in both the legal and financial aspects of estate-related issues, including the responsibilities and relationships of those involved in estate planning and settlement.

Headquartered in Overland Park, KS, the NAAEI has provided higher education programs to auctioneers and other professionals for more than 26 years. In addition to the CES designation, the NAAEI offers the Certified Auctioneers Institute (CAI) designation, specialized programs in personal property appraisal, real estate auctions, benefit auctions and courses for administrative auction personnel.

What is the “CES” Designation?

Thousands of decedents are expected to leave estates worth $1 million or more, according to Thomas J. Stanley, Ph.D. and William D. Danko, Ph.D., co-authors of the best seller The Millionaire Next Door. They predict that much of this property will be appraised and sold – creating great opportunities for auctioneers and appraisers.

Certified Estate Specialist has an advanced education about how to handle settling estates, from working with family members to dealing with lawyers and accountants. Families take a lifetime to acquire and maintain their assets; it can take just hours to dispose of those assets. A Certified Estate Specialist can ensure that all aspects of settling an estate can be handled appropriately by estate executors.

Certified Estate Specialists are highly trained professionals who are accustomed to dealing with other professionals, such as certified public accountants, trustees, tax attorneys, financial planners and family lawyers. They are familiar with the legal requirements and restrictions in their geographic areas, and will use their knowledge to bring the greatest return to those involved in the sale.

Planning for the Future!

December 19, 2005

AUBURN, IND. – Sixteen auctioneers from across the United States gathered last week in Auburn, Ind., to discuss the auction profession and brainstorm strategies to build on the future.

Michael Hoffman, Auctioneer of Pickerington, Ohio was among a select group invited to attend the first ever “Think Tank” session sponsored by the National Auctioneers Association (NAA). Attendees were the “cream of the crop” from across the United States and Canada, including 2 past presidents of NAA (Rob Doyle & John Roebuck), the current president (Dennis Kruse), the president-elect (Bill Sheridan), and the vice president (Tommy Williams).

“Our goal in conducting this Think Tank session was to garner information from some of our professionals to help pave a bright future for the next generation of auctioneers,” said Dennis Kruse, CAI, NAA president, who planned and coordinated the event.

“It was a distinct pleasure and honor to be selected to participate in such a ground breaking event. The wealth of knowledge shared in our sessions, such as real estate auction techniques and technology usage, will hopefully help blaze a trail for future auctioneers to follow as a guide to having more successful auctions and promoting a positive image of our profession,” said Michael Hoffman, Auctioneer.

One of the topics explored by the Think Tank group was “If NAA was to develop and host an ‘Innovation Center,’ what should be considered and what would it look like?” Other topics included real estate auctions, benefit auctions, and live Internet auctions – all of which are growing segments in the auction industry.

Results of the meeting will be shared with the NAA Board of Directors and with NAA committees for future input and work.

Auctions are one of the most historic and popular forms of buying and selling goods, and the industry continues to grow each year. An ongoing research study overseen by the NAA shows that gross revenues during the first three quarters of 2005 increased 4.75 percent from the same period in 2004. If this trend continues, the auction industry will contribute nearly $227.5 billion to the 2005 economy.

This study has also found that auctioneers are finding even more opportunities in real estate. Gross revenue from residential real estate auctions grew 8.2 percent compared to the same time last year. The value of all residential real estate sold at auction in 2005 is estimated at $13.1 billion. While revenue from commercial and industrial real estate auctions and vacant land and agricultural real estate auctions remained largely unchanged, real estate auctions remain on pace to top $48 billion in gross revenue for 2005.
